KMC council demands end to load-shedding

Total 13 resolutions approved during council session

KARACHI: The city’s mayor, Wasim Akhtar, presided over the general meeting of the council of the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) which was held on Monday.

The council approved 13 resolutions during its proceedings, of which two were approved unanimously and 11 were approved with majority votes, whereas another resolution on allocation of funds for union committees was recommended to the finance committee for further consideration. Before this, the council ratified the proceedings of its previous meeting.

The mayor demanded that utility services providers refrain from carrying out load-shedding and reducing supply of water to citizens during the month of Ramazan. He said the Karachi Water and Sewerage Board (KWSB) should depute staff at its installations who will perform their duties honestly.

The council expressed its concern over persistent power outages in the city especially in the hot weather and demanded that action be taken against K-Electric and Rs200 billion be returned to the citizens of Karachi. The council also said the electricity supplier be under government control once again.



The council requested the Chief Justice of Pakistan and chief election commissioner of Sindh that development funds should be spent through elected chairmen of union councils instead of being released to the community development programmes and deputy commissioners. The council also asked the federal and Sindh governments to stop uplift schemes and take up these works after the general elections so that transparency in development works is ensured.

The council also strongly condemned the recent interview of former prime minister Nawaz Sharif, which the members said was based on 'anti-state thinking'.



Through other resolutions the council approved the upgrade of telephone operators and technicians from BPS-7 and BPS-9 to BPS-11 and BPS-15 and also sanctioned the allocation of a Rs10,000 imprest account for the senior estate director at KMC and Rs20,000 account for the senior director of anti-encroachments. The council also approved a contract for slaughtering at the North Karachi Slaughter House for 2017-18 and increase in the entry fee of the Karachi Zoo, Landhi-Korangi Zoo and Safari Park.

The council also approved a resolution through which the services of the KMC council department’s director, Ghufran Ahmed, were appreciated.



Council members expressed their views on various resolutions adopted by the council and gave their suggestions and opinions regarding various issues pertaining to the KMC and city and to bring improvement in matters of different departments.
