An eight-year-old girl was raped and murdered in Nawabshah district on Sunday.

The police registered an FIR and arrested the suspect, said to be an adult cousin of the victim, on Monday.

According to the police, the alleged culprit, Ghulam Hussain Bhatti, entered the house of Muhammad Niaz Bhatti when the child was alone in the house. The family had gone to attend a Quran khwani in the neighbourhood.

B-Section police SHO Sanaullah Panhwar told the media that the suspect was arrested from his house. Talking to the media outside the Peoples Medical University Hospital, where the police brought him to take his DNA sample, the suspect confessed to his crime.

"I went to my uncle's home ... I found my cousin alone at home, locked her in a room and raped her," he admitted. "Fearing that she might tell her parents [about the rape], I strangled her and later slit her throat to ensure that she had died."

The body was wrapped in a quilt and thrown in a cattle pen in the area. "I am feeling ashamed and guilty for committing this crime," Bhatti said. The police registered an FIR on complaint of the aggrieved father.
