LAHORE: Auctioning the plots allocated for the public by the Lahore Development Authority (LDA) is a breach of basic human rights, said Punjab Teacher’s Union (PTU) General Secretary Rana Liaquat in a statement on Monday. “If the sizeable plots allocated for the construction of schools and hospitals are auctioned off, how will the people avail the benefits of free education and healthcare,” he questioned. Only wealthy investors will be able to buy these plots, he stated. Why is the LDA auctioning off these plots to investors if the allottees have already paid for them, he expressed. This practice should be scrutinised to protect the interests of the people, he emphasised. The secretary also appealed to the chief justice to take notice of the matter, while demanding that the plots be handed over to the government. This will ensure that citizens are able to avail free-of-cost education and healthcare, Liaquat said in his statement. Those plots that have already been auctioned off should be reviewed, he added.
