Extortion cases still a big problem in provincial capital, say police

Four people were injured when unidentified miscreants hurled an explosive device at a house in the Beri Bagh area of Yakatot police station on Thursday.

Talking to The Express Tribune, a police official said that the house of a dry fruit dealer was targeted by unidentified attackers in which four people were injured, including children.

“The owner was constantly receiving threats from extortionists who were demanding ‘donations’ from him," the official stated.

"When he declined to pay them his house was attacked,” he added, saying that the injured had been rushed to the hospital and an FIR had been registered in the case.

It is worth mentioning that extortion cases have been on the decline in the city, but are still a problem for local traders.

Earlier, it was revealed that the Islamic Emirate or Afghan Taliban was found to be involved in at least nine cases of extortion in the provincial capital in 2015, according to police officials.

Talking to The Express Tribune, an official of the police, requesting anonymity, said the Afghan Taliban were engaged in extortion “since day one” and were continuing to do so.
