Five educated men have been arrested on charges of kidnapping for ransom by mostly targeting people in Gulshan-e-Iqbal and North Nazimabad.
Anti-Violent Crime Cell (AVCC) chief SSP Farooq Awan announced the arrests at a press conference on Sunday. Amir, Arshad, Suleman, Taha and Ansar were arrested when the AVCC raided a place near Peoples Colony in North Nazimabad after receiving a tip-off about kidnappings in the area.
Awan said that the men were involved in short-term kidnappings. They used to pick up people in their car, rob them and then drop them off in the same area.
The SSP said that the last person they tried to intercept was a businessman, Musharraf, in Buffer Zone, but he managed to escape.
DSP Irfan Ahmed told The Express Tribune that the men admitted to at least six kidnappings since 2010. The suspects are educated - Amir has an MBA, Suleman and Arshad are university graduates, while the other two are business and accounting students. “They are not professional kidnappers and they have a good family background,” the DSP explained. “Amir was their ringleader and they used to kidnap people to earn money the easy way.”
