SC’s directives: VCs of three more varsities asked to resign

LAHORE:
The Supreme Court asked the vice chancellors of Fatima Jinnah Medical University, Rawalpindi Medical University and Faisalabad Medical University to resign from their posts on Sunday.

The orders were given during the hearing of a suo motu notice by a two-member bench comprising of Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar and Justice Ijazul Ahsan.

The bench also formed three search committees for selecting new VCs on the basis of merit, directing them to finish the selection process within six weeks. The search committees were also tasked with appointing acting VCs from senior professors teaching at the universities

The bench also tasked the search committees with appointing acting vice chancellors from among the senior most professors teaching at the universities.


During the hearing, former Punjab University VC Dr Zakria Zakar appealed to the court to forgive him for the mistake he has made. He admitted to the fact that the search committee did not appoint him on merit; however he claimed that they did not make him permanent.

To this, CJP replied that this was done so that decisions can be made based on self-interest.

Further, the bench also formed a new search committee to select a permanent VC for King Edward Medical University.
