LAHORE:
Lahore High Court Chief Justice Muhammad Yawar Ali formed a three-member full bench to hear petitions pressing for the implementation of the court’s previous order to ban protests on Mall Road.

The full bench will be headed by Justice Muhammad Anwaarul Haq while Justice Syed Muhammad Kazim Raza Shamsi and Justice Faisal Zaman Khan will be its members. The full bench will take up the petitions by April 24.

A local merchant Naeem Mir and other traders knocked on the doors of the LHC to get the previous orders implemented. The LHC had banned any protest and similar activities on Mall Road. The petitioners said the order had not been implemented despite the court orders.

They said protesting on Mall Road had become a matter of routine, adding it affected the business sector and traffic flow.

In previous proceedings, another LHC full bench had directed the provincial government to initiate the process for legislation over protests on Mall Road. It asked that action be taken keeping articles 15 and 16 of the Constitution in consideration. The two articles protected the freedom of peaceful movement and the assembly. The bench was being headed by Justice Aminuddin Khan who heard petitions moved by local traders and individuals against protests, rallies and sit-ins on Mall Road.

Justice Shahid Jamil Khan, a member of the bench, showed concern over the blockade of Mall Road.
