FAISALABAD: The book reading habit among the youth is declining due to excessive usage of telecommunication and changing lifestyle. The trend needs to be curtailed for a healthy society, said University of Agriculture, Faisalabad Vice Chancellor Dr Muhammad Iqbal Zafar.
He was speaking at the launch ceremony of the new edition of UAF Students Magazine Kisht-e-Nau 2017-18.
The vice chancellor stressed on the need to promote literary activities among the youth because reading literature is essential for personality development. He said the youth of the country had a lot of potential and increasing their reading activity would allow them to compete with the rest of world. He added that a relaxed and happy culture must be promoted in society.
Dr Zafar said only books could eradicate injustices and social disparities. “Quality education is the engine of a bright future. In the modern era, people are glued to cell phones, the internet and TV sets.” He said such platforms provided an opportunity to students to excel in literature and also worked as a motivational stage for the promotion of literature.
Akhtar said that with humorous writing, they could not only create a jolly atmosphere but also highlight the problems of society in a better way. “There is a need to spread the message of love, care and tolerance in society.”
Convener Kisth-e-Nau Dr Shahzad Basra called for the promotion of book reading habit among people. He believed this would eventually ensure development of the nation.
