An anti-terrorism court (ATC) in Malakand on Wednesday sentenced a man to death on three counts for raping and then murdering a five–year-old girl in the Besham area of Shangla district.

The court also imposed a fine of Rs600,000 on him and directed him to pay Rs200,000 in compensation to the bereaved family.

The verdict was announced at anti-terrorism court Gul Kada, Swat, amid tight security.

According to public prosecutor Saeed Naeem, on June 21 last year, Jumaraz spotted Madeha, 5, as she walked to a nearby store. He forced the girl in to his compound where he brutally raped her.

The elderly man was apparently fasting when he committed the heinous crime. Later, he dumped her body in a pool of water.

The Shangla police, though, managed to apprehend the accused.

After nine months of legal wrangling, the ATC awarded him death on three separate counts and slapped him with a fine.

Speaking to reporters after the court gave its judgment, the victim’s father said that the accused should be hanged publicly so as to set an example for others what happens if they commit this heinous crime.

The father added that he was satisfied with the court’s decision.
