MPA wants to ban ‘tallaq’ in TV dramas
Says encouragement of divorce was affecting the society at a large scale
LAHORE:
A lawmaker of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) demanded a ban on the use of the word ‘tallaq’ (divorce) in television dramas, claiming it was creating a bad impact on society and needed to be stopped immediately.
The demand was put forward by PTI legislator Malik Taimoor Masood in a resolution he submitted in the Punjab Assembly. Masood contended in his resolution that the word ‘tallaq’ was being used in dramas while in the religion the word was declared, what he called, ‘makrooh’. He said the word was being used almost in every drama serial without bothering about its significance, sensitivity and impact.
He said no legal body had been formed to control the use of such words in dramas. He said the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (PEMRA) should be bound to take steps to stop the use of such words on television channels. He demanded the House to direct PEMRA to impose a ban on the use of the word to protect society.
Talking to The Express Tribune, Masood said encouragement of divorce was affecting society at a large scale as women were being incited against their husbands. He said TV dramas should create a positive impact in society and strengthen family bonds rather than support divorce and separation between a husband and wife. He said the use of word ‘Tallaq’ was bad and should be avoided in both dramas and daily life.
