'Joker Origins' film to be a prequel to 'The Dark Knight'

Joaquin Phoenix is reported to be playing the character

Set to be directed by Todd Phillips, the upcoming Joker Origins film will serve as a prequel to Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight which came out in 2008, reported Hindustan Times.


The synopsis of the new DC film reveals how Joker, who was once a well-meaning man, became one of the most notorious criminals of Gotham. "20 years before Batman saved the city in The Dark Knight trilogy, Gotham was a crime-ridden, dangerous place. On one bad day, a man who tries to escape his miseries through theatre and stand-up comedy, becomes the most dangerous criminal of all time," read the synopsis.

It further stated that the prequel to The Dark Knight will be produced by Martin Scorsese and explore how the 'Clown Prince of Crime' came to exist.

It is yet to be confirmed  who will play the iconic role of The Joker, but reports suggest that Joaquin Phoenix may take the lead.

Earlier, actors such as Jack Nicholson and the late Heath Ledger have essayed the psychopathic criminal in Batman films. Jared Leto also played Joker in Suicide Squad.
