Federal law officer’s conduct baffles court

Polani bail now to be heard on May 16.

KARACHI:

A lawyer for the federal government and FIA baffled the Sindh High Court by failing to answer its questions when it was hearing the bail request for Atif Polani, one of the men accused in arguably Pakistan’s largest foreign currency scam.

Polani was one of the directors of Khanani and Kalia Money Exchange company. He is being represented by Shaukat Zubedi advocate.

On Thursday, when the court asked, a deputy attorney general said that he was ready to make a submission. Justices Gulzar Ahmed and Shahid Anwar Bajwa asked him what laws Polani was booked under. The DAG said he did not know. When asked if he had gone through the case laws and rulings of the courts in identical matters, he again expressed the inability to say anything.

The judges were baffled by this but having no choice, adjourned the matter till today (Friday) asking the DAG to appear along with the senior most DAG, Ashqiue Raza.

The matter was fixed for Thursday but because court work was suspended on the request of the SHC, it was again adjourned till Monday, May 16 at 11 am.

The directors of Khanani and Kalia were exonerated of illegal banking and other charges due to technical flaws.
