NAB okays reference against ex-SSGC officials

A total of seven inquiries and two investigations also given a go-ahead

While authorising a reference against former officials of the Sui Southern Gas Company (SSGC), the executive board of the National Accountability Bureau (NAB) on Wednesday also approved seven inquiries and two investigations into a total of nine mega corruption cases.

The board meeting was chaired by NAB chief Justice (retd) Javed Iqbal at NAB headquarters.

The board approved filing a corruption reference against SSGC’s former managing director Azeem Iqbal Siddique, former chairman finance committee Shahid Aziz Siddique, general manager finance Malik Usman Hassan and others.

The officials are accused of hiring services of M/S Pro Gas Private Limited without verifying their technical and financial capabilities in violation of Public Procurement Regulatory Authority (PPRA) rules. That anomaly inflicted Rs1.174 billion losses on the national kitty.

An inquiry was also authorised against Pir Sibghatullah Rashidi and officers and officials of the Sindh Board of Revenue for illegally allotting a government plot to a private person, misusing authority.

They are also accused of allotting the land of Karachi’s Defence View Society and making illegal construction on the state land thus inflicting losses to the tune of Rs212 million on the exchequer.

The board also approved an inquiry against Capital Development Authority’s (CDA) former member estate Brig (retd) Asad Munir, former director estate Khalid Mehmood Mirza and former director estate Ziaur Rehman Toor, former deputy financial adviser and others.

They have been accused of restoration of a plot in a post residential sector of Islamabad by using their authority illegally, causing loss of millions of rupee.

The executive board also authorised another inquiry against former AIG Balochistan Abdul Qadeer Bhatti for allegedly having assets beyond his known sources of income.

Another investigation was authorised against the Sindh Local Government Department for illegally appointing 12,810 persons in grade 1 to 15 in the local government department.

The board authorised inquiry against the officials and officers of the C&D Department Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, MS Mechatech Private Limited and others for illegally awarding a contract to Mechatech.

They are accused of supplying low-quality air conditioners to Lady Reading Hospital which caused Rs2435.906 million losses to the national exchequer.

Inquiries and investigations were also approved against officials and officers of Mardan’s Abdul Wali Khan University, the Quetta Electricity Supply Company, Lahore’s Zafairs Textile Mills Limited, the Port Qasim Authority, and the Ministry of Industries.

The NAB chairman directed the officers of the bureau to utilise their energies for making Pakistan corruption-free. “NAB is strictly adhering to the policy of accountability for all,” he was quoted as saying in an official statement.
