Opposition Leader in the National Assembly Syed Khursheed Shah has said that the recent meeting between Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi and Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar will prove to be more damaging than fruitful for the country, Express News reported.

Talking to the media in Islamabad on Wednesday, the Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) leader told reporters that a meeting between the heads of two largest institutions in the country was a routine matter and such meetings had always taken place.

“However, there is a time and a place for such meetings. The recent one between PM Abbasi and CJP Nisar will backfire, which could prove to be dangerous,” Shah was quoted as saying.

The PPP leader was of the opinion that if the premier wanted to meet the top judge, he should have done so in secret. According to Shah, holding a meeting in the open would put the CJP on the defensive.

“A public meeting signifies that the two talked about a number of issues of mutual interest,” he added.

Asked to comment on the possibility of another National Reconciliation Ordinance (NRO), Shah said he could not comment on the matter, be it an NRO or a judicial NRO.

“An NRO is only required when the institutions are weak. If they are strong, there is no need for an NRO. We need to improve our system, institutions and judiciary,” Shah told reporters.
