The United Arab Emirates (UAE) celebrated on Monday completion of the first-ever nuclear powr plant not only in the country but the whole Arab Gulf region.
The $20 billion Barakah plant west of Abu Dhabi has been constructed by a consortium led by Korea Electric Power Corp in nine years.
It’s one of the four nuclear reactors being constructed with South Korea’s cooperation. When fully operational, these will produce 5,600 megawatts of electricity.
Crown Prince of Abu Dhabi Shaikh Mohammad Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the deputy supreme commander of the UAE armed forces and South Korean President Moon Jae-in were welcomed at Monday’s reception ceremony, who accompanied by a number of dignitaries and officials, The Gulf News reported.

Shaikh Mohammad later expressed his gratitude to President Shaikh Khalifa Bin Zayed Al Nahyan and the partnership with South Korea for carrying out the mega project.
“My dear friend Moon Jae-in, President of Korea, and I today viewed completion of first power plant in Barakah Nuclear Energy Plant project. All thanks are due to President, our Korean friends and to joint efforts that have resulted in first stage of this giant project being completed,” he tweeted.
“The UAE and Korea are ambitious countries with a converging vision and an exceptional, model relationship. We have a productive partnership which serves our higher interests and we shall do everything to make it grow even stronger,” the Abu Dhabi crown prince further said in another tweet.
