KARACHI:
A retired bank officer was killed on Thursday while another man and his son were injured in a firing incident in New Rizvia Society.

According to police officials, the incident took place when armed men on a motorcycle opened fire on a Honda Civic, killing 58-year-old Ameer Ali, son of Aziz, on the spot, and injuring Ali Raza, 30, and his three-year-old son, Asghar Ali Raza.

The body was shifted to Jinnah Postgraduate Medical Centre for medico-legal formalities.

A contingent of law enforcers reached the site to collect evidence. According to Sacchal SHO Shakir Ali, the deceased and injured were residents of New Rizvia Society and belonged to the Shia community. The SHO added that the injured Ali Raza was the deceased's nephew. The assailants targeted them soon after their car exited the society.

Initial investigations suggest that the armed assailants were already present outside the society waiting for the victims, the officer said.

The injured father and son were shifted to a private hospital where their conditions were termed out of danger.

The Sindh inspector-general of police took notice of the incident and sought a detailed report from the Malir SSP.

Majlis Wahdat-e-Muslimeen (MWM) also condemned the incident, terming it a sectarian-based targeted killing. "The targeted killing despite high alert in the city poses a question over the performance of security agencies," remarked MWM leader Allama Sadiq Jafri. "There will be no peace until killers from banned militant outfits and their facilitators are arrested," he said.
