SC extends deadline for Rao Anwar's arrest
CJP gives three-day deadline to IG Sindh for review, submission of airport footage
The Supreme Court (SC) on Friday directed the Sindh inspector general of police (IGP) to submit a report on the progress made to arrest former Malir SSP Rao Anwar in Naqeebullah Mehsud’s extrajudicial killing case within three days.
A three-member bench, headed the Chief Justice Mian Saqib Nisar, was hearing a suo motu case regarding extrajudicial killing of Naqeebullah by Anwar.
The bench inquired from Sindh IGP Allah Dino Khawaja about the progress made in tracking down the former Malir SSP, main accused in the case.
IG Khawaja informed the bench that closed-circuit television footage had been received to determine whether Anwar fled the country from the Islamabad airport.
He requested the bench to grant him some time to examine the footage.
The chief justice asked the provincial police chief as to how much time was required for the process. He replied that substantial progress would be made in the next two to three days.
CJP Nisar granted the time to the Sindh IG with directions to submit a progress report in the court on Monday.
None appeared on behalf of the Airport Security Force despite the court notice.
On January 13, 2018, former SSP Anwar had claimed to have gunned down four members of the defunct Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) in an encounter near Shah Latif Town in Karachi. According to him, Naqeebullah had links with the banned TTP and was living in Karachi’s Sohrab Goth area using a fake name.
However, the family members of Naseemullah alias Naqeebullah claim that he was an aspiring model and was killed in a fake police encounter.
