The education department has proposed setting up 23 new colleges in rural Sindh, including a cadet college in Khairpur.
The establishment of the cadet college was discussed at a meeting, presided over by Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah at Chief Minister House on Tuesday.
Senior Education Minister Pir Mazharul Haq and other department officials supported the proposed project.
Project Director Commander Muhammad Aslam Rana said 400 acres would be needed for the college, which would include an administrative block, academic complex, dairy and poultry farm, shops and hospital.
“A 180-acre plot has been earmarked for the cadet college near the highway,” said Khairpur DCO Ghulam Abbas Baloch.
The DCO said the new college will accommodate people from Sukkur, Ghotki, Khairpur and Naushero Feroz districts.
The scheme will be approved after the submission of the project’s first plan or PC-1.
Sindh already has four cadet colleges - in Petaro, Sanghar, Larkana and Ghotki - while there are plans to build five new colleges. They will be set up in Shaheed Benazirabad, Dadu, Mithi, Kandhkot and Gadap Town.
“We need to impart professional and technical training, which is why the present government is encouraging the establishment of cadet colleges, public schools, technical institutions and computer training centres,” said Shah.
There are 261 colleges in Sindh, out of which 131 are in Karachi, 54 are in Hyderabad and the rest are spread out across the remaining areas of Sindh.
