Assault: Caretaker of historic site burnt in acid attack
Injured shifted to Karachi as Sukkur does not have adequate burns treatment ward.
SUKKUR:
Writer and caretaker of the House of the Seven Sisters (Satiyan Jo Asthan) Shoukat Khawajai was severely burnt after men threw acid on him on Tuesday.
The attack occurred when he was sitting near the window of his house located in Makki Shah Mohallah near MK School. Three people, riding on a motorcycle, threw acid at him through the window and fled.
Khawajai was referred to a Karachi hospital on Tuesday evening, as doctors at Civil hospital, Sukkur, said that he had 60 per cent burns, and they did not have the equipment to treat him.
The police registered an FIR against three people on the complaint of his son Nazakat Ali Khawajai. The accused include Abad Hussain Farooqi, his son Aftab Hussain Farooqi and one Azizullah Katpar, who has been arrested.
Khawajai’s son Suhail told The Express Tribune that his father’s left eye has been damaged. He said that his father was sitting near the window and reading a book as there was no electricity, when he was attacked.
He also said that Abad Hussain Farooqi of Ranipur, one of the men nominated in the FIR, was asking his father to hand over the caretakership of the historic site. When his father refused, Farooqi threatened him.
Suhail said that hot words were exchanged between the two men last Monday. They also went to the Rohri police station but the SHO concerned requested them to reconcile the matter. “The two men had agreed to resolve the issue on Sunday but today they attacked and injured my father.”
