KARACHI:
Association of Builders and Developers of Pakistan (ABAD) Chairperson Arif Yousuf Jeewa has demanded that the government demolish illegally constructed structures in Karachi.
“The government should take stern action against the contractors involved in these activities and the state officials patronising these violators of law,” he said.
In a statement, the ABAD chairperson said illegal construction without NOC from relevant departments was a serious problem in Karachi. “ABAD is against such illegal activities and has raised its voice against illegal construction as such activities badly affect municipal policies and infrastructure of the city.”
Karachi was the host to more than 50% slums that challenged the Sindh Building Control Authority (SBCA) and the Master Plan Department, he said, adding these slums were the result of pressure on the departments responsible for providing basic facilities to the people of the city.
Jeewa said so-called contractors involved in illegal construction were not paying any tax to the national exchequer. Not only that, these elements were also financially damaging those builders and developers who were carrying out their businesses according to rules and regulations.
He appealed to all utility services to stop providing facilities for illegally constructed buildings, so that illegal construction could be curtailed.
