Sports should be widely promoted in educational institutions right from schools to curb inclination of youth towards negative and unhealthy activities.

This was said by Government College University (GCU) Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Hassan Amir Shah while addressing participants at the inaugural ceremony of three-day Annual Sports of the university, a press release issued by the varsity stated on Wednesday. At least 6,000 students from 30 departments of the GCU are participating in the annual sports, including the march past, athletics meet and gymkhana events.

A large number of foreign students and faculty members participated in the grand march past, while the musicians hailing from GCU’s Nazir Ahmed Music Society (NAMS) presented a special anthem for 118th Athletics Meet.

The GCU vice-chancellor said sports and co-curricular activities were as important as academic for overall grooming and personality development of the students.

He added that GCU students were also performing well in international games. The VC also appreciated the participation of special students in the annual sports.


GCU Sports Director Khadim Ali Khan said that their sportsmen remained busy in camps throughout the year, but the basic objective of holding the annual sports was to involve those students who do not participate in healthy sports activities. He urged the government to make sports activities mandatory in all schools, colleges and universities and provide ample sports facilities, especially grounds for the students.

Later, the first day of the annual sports event was marked by 1500-meter race which was won by Muhammad Waseem from Physical Education Department.

In 3,000-meter race, intermediate student Bilal Ahmed clinched the first position, while Hafiz Farooq of Physical Education crossed the finish line first in men’s 100 meter race.

Tariq Mehmood from Punjabi Department clinched first position in men’s Shot Put. The most enthralling contest of 4x100 meters relay among boys was won by a team of Physical Education Department.
