Gas Deal: Woodside signs ‘historic’ agreement

A historic Australian $1.5 billion agreement has been reached.

SYDNEY:
A historic Australian $1.5 billion agreement has been reached between traditional Aboriginal landowners and major Australian energy producer Woodside that allows a natural gas project to go ahead. The deal, sealed late Friday, will see the Goolarabooloo Jabirr Aboriginal people relinquish their native title rights to 3,500 hectares (8,648 acres) of land 60 kilometres (37 miles) north of Broome in Western Australia. In return, they will receive a benefits package worth Australian $1.5 billion (US$1.6 billion) in the form of housing, education and funds to address social issues, allowing Woodside’s Aus$30 billion Browse Basin gas project to proceed.
