Mango export to US moves a step further
American firms to get import permits by month-end.
KARACHI:
The initiative to export mangoes to the United States has moved a step forward as all importing companies in the US will have permits from the Animal Plant Health and Inspection Service (APHIS) by the fourth week of May, which will enable them to import the fruit.
Harvest Tradings CEO Ahmad Jawad, in a press release on Friday, informed that about 1,483 growers across Pakistan had been trained by USAID in enhancing production of mangoes and increasing exports during the upcoming season.
Jawad said that since this was going to be the first export shipment of Pakistani mangoes to the US, APHIS, the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) and the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) had sent extensive requirements and regulations.
According to the compliance agreement with USDA, the exporters are required to develop packaging and send for approval to USDA and Sadex Corporation.
Pakistan produces more than 100 varieties of mangoes and exported 85,000 tons last year. The European Union and the Middle East are big importers of Pakistani mangoes.
