Six in the run for Nadra’s top job
Ahsan Iqbal to interview shortlisted candidates on Thursday
ISLAMABAD:
A high-level committee headed by Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal will interview six candidates on coming Thursday for the post of Nadra chairman, an important position falling vacant on February 6.
The interior ministry has shortlisted six applicants, including incumbent Nadra Chairman Usman Yusuf Mobeen, from the 183 who had applied for the position advertised last month.
The six shortlisted candidates also include two retired officers of the armed forces.
The panel of interviewers will consist of the interior secretary, additional secretaries of law, finance, interior and establishment division, and two senior most members of the Nadra Authority Board.
Overseas Pakistanis’ suffrage: SC orders NADRA to develop voting software in 10-weeks
A reliable source in the interior ministry said as per initial marking conducted on the basis of the applicants’ education and experience, Mobeen tops the list of shortlisted candidates, followed by an individual holding a PhD degree from France.
The three-year tenure of the incumbent Nadra chairman is going to expire on February 5.
In December 2017, the interior minister had forwarded a summary to the federal cabinet seeking extension in the services of Mobeen but it was rejected by the cabinet on the ground that laws do not provide for extension.
The cabinet had asked the interior ministry to advertise the post for fresh appointment. Consequently, the post was advertised in the same month, December 2017.
In response to the advertisement, as many as 183 applicants had applied for the post. A scrutiny committee headed by an additional secretary of the interior ministry had rejected 130 applications for not meeting criteria mentioned in the advertisement.
“Only 53 candidates had been shortlisted in the first phase, out of whom six have now been asked to appear before the interviewers’ panel,” said the source.
According to the laid-down criteria, candidates must hold a Master’s degree with 15 years of experience in the relevant field and must not be older than 55.
NADRA agrees to reduce cost of verification
Nadra’s former deputy chairman Syed Muzaffar Ali – who was dismissed from service on January 19 by the management on the charges of misuse of powers – was among those whose applications were rejected during the scrutiny process.
Nadra says prior to applying for the post, he had not obtained a mandatory no-objection certificate from his parent department.
Ali, who rejects all the charges levelled against him, has already been pursuing his cases against the Nadra management in the Islamabad High Court and the Lahore High Court.
Ali had The Express Tribune a few days ago that his dismissal from service by the Nadra management “on false accusations” was meant to keep him away from the whole selection process and to defame him.
