LAHORE:
Jamat-ud-Dawa (JuD) Chief Hafiz Muhammad Saeed has once again challenged his likely arrest, saying he could be detained on the behest of the United States or India.

Hafiz Saeed, in a petition moved before the Lahore High Court through his counsel Advocate AK Dogar, contended that a UN delegation was visiting Pakistan on January 26. He stated that in the wake of this development, there was a possibility that the government may take strict action against him.

He said he was founder/chairman of JuD and Falah-i-Insaniat Foundation (FIF) and had established 142 schools, three universities and was engaged in public welfare activities for the last many years. He said the Punjab government kept him under detention for 90 days and a review board comprising judges of the LHC finally ordered his release as the government failed to justify the reasons for his detention.

He submitted that the actions taken against him by the government were the result of US and Indian pressure over baseless allegations of his involvement in the Mumbai attacks.

He asked the court to bar the federal government from taking any adverse action against on the basis of the arrival of a UN delegation and order his fundamental rights as citizen of Pakistan.

On November 22, a review board comprising judges of the Lahore High Court ordered his release, turning down the government’s plea which sought the extension order of his detention.

The Lahore High Court ordered the Pakistan Electronic Media Regulatory Authority (Pemra) to decide the fate of a petition filed to seek a ban on Sahir Lodhi’s morning show in which dance performances of minor girls are shown. On Tuesday, Justice Shahid Karim started proceedings on the application in which the petitioner had told the court that the dance performances of minor girls are against moral values of society.

He implored that due to such morning shows, the incidents like Kasur are taking place in the country. He requested the court to direct Pemra for imposing a ban on his show.

The petitioner had made parties to the federal government, PEMRA, Sahir Lodhi and others in his petition. However, the LHC directed PEMRA to hear the petitioner and make a decision.
