IT minister to meet global leaders at WEF

WEF meeting this year is expected to attract more than 3,000 of the most influential leaders

ISLAMABAD: Minister for IT and Telecom Anusha Rahman, who is among the officials participating in the annual meeting of the World Economic Forum (WEF), has left for a three-day visit to Davos.

Rahman, along with renowned speakers and leaders from across the world, will participate as a panellist and speak in sessions on connected corridors, protecting the digital civic space, privacy and security as well as other topics.

The annual WEF meeting this year is expected to attract more than 3,000 of the most influential leaders from all walks of life. The IT minister will highlight achievements of Pakistan in the arena of ICT and future plans for continued growth to realise the goal of ‘Digital Pakistan’.

The secretary general of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) - a specialised agency of the United Nations - has also invited the minister in a special session on ‘Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development’, which will be held during the WEF gathering.

The Broadband Commission for Sustainable Development is a joint initiative of the ITU and Unesco aimed at boosting ICT/broadband connectivity and digital development initiatives.

Rahman has been a member on the broadband commission since July 2016.

She is also scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with global technology leaders on the sidelines of the event.

Prime Minister Shahid Khaqan Abbasi is also set to make a “Invest in Pakistan” pitch to the gathering of wealthy business executives and powerful world leaders at WEF.

Nadir Z Khan | 6 years ago | Reply I hope world leaders will tell her that her governments taxes of 33 percent on broadband, huge taxes on fiber optic cable import and minimum tax that doesn’t allow depreciation expenses to be claimed before taxes, is a major blow to the growth of broadband.
