FAISALABAD:
There is a need to promote small and medium enterprises (SMEs) to transform the rural set-up into a growing business hub of the country.

This was said by speakers during a seminar on self-sustaining rural enterprises at University of Agriculture Faisalabad (UAF), a press release issued on Thursday stated. The event was organised by Institute of Agricultural and Resource Economics. UAF Vice-Chancellor Prof Muhammad Iqbal Zafar was the chief guest.

While addressing the participants, the vice-chancellor said that 3.2 million SMEs were contributing 30% share in the national economy.

He urged the participants belonging to rural areas of the district to get themselves engaged with small businesses like fish, ostrich, rabbit, parrot, and fancy birds farming and attract people with agri-tourism by putting organic food and healthy recreational activities in the area.

He emphasised the participants to involve the rural females in household business activities and indigenous backyard poultry farming. He maintained, “This would certainly enhance their income and raise their living standard.”

Iqbal Zafar pointed out, “We need to work harder and utilise our skills.”

He said Turkish and Thai people were famous due to their successful model of rural enterprises. The VC stressed the need to replicate a similar system in the rural areas of the country.
