MULTAN: Hundreds of students staged protest against Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf Vice-Chairman Shah Mahmood Qureshi for razing sports ground of Bahuddin Zakariya University for the arrangements of Valima ceremony of his son Zain Qureshi on Sunday. The protesters shouted slogans against PTI’s vice-chairman and demanded action against the destruction of sports ground.

Haider, one of the protesters, said that politicians of the region misuse their power. He said, “No politician is authorised to demolish anything in the sports grounds at public universities.” He added that the boundary walls of sports ground were razed and all the sports nets were removed.

Public Relations Director Dr Sohaib told The Express Tribune, “The university has given permission for the valima ceremony not for destroying the sports ground.” He maintained, “Only Rs5,000 have been paid for organising the event in the sports ground.” He said strict action would be taken by the officials for illegal demolition.

Murtaza, another student, said that labourers employed for establishing a wedding hall had destroyed the athletics ground and broke the cricket screen of the sports ground.

He said that All Pakistan Inter-universities Cricket Championship and Inter-Collegiate Athletics Championship were scheduled to be held on January 18 and 23 respectively but due to the wedding arrangements in the sports ground, these events would not be conducted.
