The United Nations Security Council (UNSC) remained divided to discuss the situation in Iran and most UNSC members criticized the United States for exploiting the issue.

French Ambassador to the UN Francois Delattre said the protests do not threaten international peace and security, Radio Pakistan reports.

Russian Ambassador Vassily Nebenzia said the United States is abusing the Security Council’s platform.

UN Security Council to meet on Friday to discuss Iran protests

China’s Deputy Ambassador Wu Haitao in his remarks said situation of Iran at the council “does not help resolve the domestic issue of Iran.

The US Ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley said the protests is a human rights issue and it can spill over into an international problem.

At Washington’s request, the UNSC held an emergency meeting on Friday to discuss the wave of protests in Iran.

The United States formally requested the meeting on Thursday but Russia and some of the other council members are not convinced that the top UN body should discuss the unrest in Iran, diplomats said.

Russia has criticized the US push for Iran to be discussed at the Security Council and it remained unclear if other council members would try to block the meeting via a procedural vote.
