ISLAMABAD: The developed world has achieved phenomenal economic growth by promoting academia-industry linkages and Pakistan should follow suit as well, said Islamabad Chamber of Commerce and  Industry (ICCI) President Sheikh Amir Waheed on Thursday.

He was addressing students of NUST who visited the Chamber House.

Waheed advised the students to focus on applied research, which is badly needed to resolve key issues of the industry. He also urged universities to give students more opportunities of academic research that could be applied effectively to resolve real world problems.

Highlighting the large number of Pakistanis entering the labour market every year due to a young population, he said that the country’s public and private sectors do not have the capacity to absorb them. He said that to cope with the issue of rising unemployment, universities should focus on creating an entrepreneurial culture among their students which would enable them to become job creators instead of job seekers.

ICCI Senior Vice President Muhammad Naveed said that hard work, honesty, dedication and commitment were golden principles that ensured success in every profession including entrepreneurship.

A detailed presentation was also given to the students about the role and functioning of ICCI and its promotion of business community’s interests.
