LAHORE:
The Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC) made significant progress in 2017 towards improving the quality of higher education and research in the province. This was stated by PHEC Chairperson Dr Mohammad Nizamuddin.

He was chairing a meeting of senior officers at the PHEC Secretariat in Lahore on Tuesday.

Nizamussin said that in a short span of time, the commission had achieved major milestones with its limited resources.

“The commission has held four meetings and we are progressing steadily by following the guidelines of our commission. We have established various initiatives for public and private sector colleges and universities. This is for students who want to develop more skills and market-oriented education.”

According to PHEC, the commission established foreign and indigenous training and scholarship programmes in 2017 for staff and the faculty of Punjab’s 700-plus public colleges and universities.

A rigorous accreditation system, to ensure quality standards for private sector colleges and universities, was also established by PHEC.

To address the demand from students for career counselling and skill-based education, the commission launched career counselling centres in four public sector colleges and a community colleges model. The latter provided two-year associate degrees (equivalent to a bachelor’s degree) in textile designing, information technology, media studies as well as accounting and finance.

Responding to the dire need to enhance the effectiveness of teaching and learning in Pakistan, the PHEC established the Faculty Development Academy, the first-of-its-kind in Punjab. More than 400 faculty members from public sector colleges and universities have already been trained in academics, administration, and finance.

In addition, the PHEC organised training for freshly-inducted college teachers in each division of Punjab and tailored training for vice chancellors and directors of student affairs.

The commission also initiated several international and national scholarship programmes in 2017, including post-doctoral fellowships and split PhD scholarships. “We are sending our faculty to the best destinations in the world to enable exposure and experience and equip them with the best learning opportunities in their field,” said Dr Nizamuddin.
