Rash driving: Revellers run over constables, killing one
Rumour circulates on social media that the driver is related to a political family

A police constable was run over and killed while another was critically injured allegedly by a car at a police picket in the limits of Defence A police on the New Year’s Eve.
Police said that the victims, identified as Mustansir Hussain and Qasim, were on duty at a makeshift picket set up near the Cavalry Ground Chowk late Sunday night to deal with youths involved in one-wheeling and hooliganism.
The constables tried to intercept the car, but instead of stopping, it ran over them, said police. “CCTV footages of the incident showed, the car broke the cordons and ran over the police constables.”
As a result, the policemen received multiple injuries and were admitted to a nearby hospital for treatment where doctors pronounced Hussain dead, while Qasim is being treated at the Lahore General Hospital where his condition is stated to be critical. The deceased policeman, Mustansir Hussain, hailed from Wazirabad, Gujranwala.
According to the FIR registered with Defence A police station, the suspected driver sped away after the accident. Police registered an FIR No. 12/18 under sections 427 (Mischief causing damage to the amount of Rs50), 322 (Punishment for qatl-bis-sabab) and 337-G (Punishment for hurt by rash or negligent driving) against a suspect named Muhammad Saeed.
Rumour swells
Later in the day, a rumour swelled on the social media that Munir was related to the Sharif’s family.
To verify the news, Maryam Nawaz tweeted: “My samdhi is Chaudhry Munir, not Mian Munir.”
The FIR stated that the police later came to know that the driver of the car was identified as Muhammad Saeed, a resident of Melsi, district Vehari.
However, according to records of the Excise and Taxation Department, Punjab, the car was registered to Mustafa Ahmad, the son of Munir Ahmad.
When contacted SHO Yasir Abbas, he refused to comment, saying he was busy.
DIG Operations Dr Haider Ashraf said that policemen and security guards of DHA had identified the suspected driver Muhammad Saeed whose name was nominated in the FIR. The SHO registered the FIR according to circumstances at that time, he said, adding that more facts would be shared after proper investigation. Dr Ashraf ruled out allegations of protecting or favouring any suspect. “A thorough inquiry will be made into the case.”
