BAHAWALPUR: Pakistani linguists should work on regional languages so that illiterate and less educated people could also benefit from modern developments.

This was said by speakers during the 2nd International Conference on Linguistics and Literature, a joint-venture of Higher Education Commission and Islamia University of Bahawalpur (IUB). The event was held at Baghdadul Jadeed Campus, IUB.

The speakers included participants from France, United Kingdom, New Zealand, Turkey, China, Indonesia and different universities of Pakistan.

There were 15 sessions, 135 presentations of research papers and articles and 13 poster presentations on various aspects of linguistics and literature.

On the concluding day, the speakers said that English language teaching in Pakistan should be decolonised through production of indigenised language teaching materials.

They said indigenised Pakistani literature should be promoted in the country.

The speakers demanded that a national commission should be constituted, comprising linguists and other stakeholders to devise and monitor strategies regarding the promotion of local languages.

They said that while making any policy or taking decisions regarding language use and practice in Pakistan, Pakistani linguists should be consulted.
