KARACHI: Giant snowmen, Santa hats and fairy lights were strewn across the city as the Christian community celebrated Christmas on Monday.

Commemorating the birth of Jesus Christ, churches in the port city were illuminated by strings of fairy lights. A large number of members of the Christian community attended masses at churches in Karachi, offering special prayers in honour of Christmas.

“I have prayed for a prosperous Pakistan,” said Shamoon Gill, an activist of the community who was praying at the Central Brooks Memorial Church. Christmas festivities started on Monday morning with masses at churches such as the Holy Trinity Cathedral and St Paul’s Church.

Residential colonies and areas such as Essa Nagri, Azam Basti, Akhtar Colony and Kashmir Colony were decorated with twinkling lights and Christmas trees. To ensure that the situation remained peaceful, a heavy contingent of police and Rangers were deployed around churches throughout the province.

Leaders of different political parties also wished the Christian community in Sindh for Christmas and reaffirmed their commitment for their rights.

Pakistan Peoples Party Chairperson Bilawal Bhutto Zardari said that his party was waging a struggle for Quaid-i-Azam’s Pakistan where all citizens are equal as per his vision and there is no discrimination on the basis of religion, caste, creed or ethnicity.

He was addressing a Christmas cake cutting ceremony held at Bilawal House. Chief Minister Murad Ali Shah, Senator Sherry Rehman, Saeed Ghani, PPP Minority Wing President Dr Lalchand Ukrani and Information Secretary Anthony Naveed were among members of the PPP who attended the event, while Bishop Joseph Coutts Archdiocese of Karachi and Reverend Riaz Masih, vice-chairperson of the Church of Pakistan were also present on the occasion.

Bilawal said that December 25 is a day of double happiness as we are celebrating the 142nd birthday of the founder of the nation as well as Christmas.

He assured the Christian community that the PPP would continue the struggle to achieve dreams of Quaid-i-Azam, adding that PPP treats all the non-Muslim citizens equal as per our law and the Constitution and will not allow any discrimination against them.

Special prayers were offered on the occasion for the departed souls of martyrs of terrorist attack on the church in Quetta last week.
