Pakistan Railways has decided to rehabilitate and modernise its 146 non-functional locomotives to facilitate passengers and generate more revenue for the organisation. “Seventy-three locomotives are undergoing normal maintenance and repair work and they will be made operational through different schemes,” an official in the Ministry of Railways told APP.
He said Pakistan Railways, at present, had a fleet of 468 locomotives out of which 146 were non-functional while 322 were fully functional. “Out of these 322 locomotives, 144 are almost new having recently been procured and upgraded,” the official added. He said so far around 30 locomotives had been rehabilitated and made operational while one more locomotive would start running by the end of this month. A project for the special repair of 100 locomotives has been approved.
