Hearing in CM’s damages suit against Imran put off
Lawyers of both the sides were present in court but the judge was on leave
LAHORE:
Due to the judge’s unavailability the proceedings of the damages suit filed by Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif against Imran Khan has been adjourned till January 10 of next year.
The proceedings were adjourned as the Additional District & Session Judge Abdul Ghafar was on leave.
It is worth mentioning that the lawyers of Imran Khan were to argue on an application filed by the CM in his main suit (damages suit). Shehbaz’s lawyers were seeking the proceedings of his suit to be run on a day by day basis to thwart tactics of the respondent to delay the matter.
The lawyers of both the sides were present in the court but the judge was on leave. However the next date has been fixed for arguments.
‘Rs10b bribe offer’: Shehbaz files defamation suit against Imran
It is worth mentioning that petitioner Punjab CM Shehbaz Sharif, in his petition, had submitted that he belonged to a noble family and is a highly respectable individual, who enjoys an excellent reputation in both national and international circles, having a long and illustrious career in politics and public service to his credit.
The CM had said that after the 2013 general elections, he was again re-elected as an MPA and then as the chief minister for a third term and has served twice as president of PML-N.
Shehbaz pleaded that Iman Khan, a political rival of PML-N, in last week of April 2017 started uttering, spreading, and resorting to publication maliciously false, baseless and unfounded oral statements and representations against the plaintiff to the effect that the plaintiff had, through some persons/relative apparently known to the defendant as well, offered to pay a sum of Rs10 billion to the defendant in exchange for his withdrawing and backing off from, or remaining silent on the issue of Panama Papers case.
He said the defendant ruined his image not only in the eyes of the nation but also in the people of the world wherever that programme had been watched.
Court dismisses PTI plea to disqualify Shehbaz Sharif
Shehbaz has implored that on April 28, 2017 the defendant held a public gathering in Parade Ground where he again repeated the false allegation. He continued to address them as ‘a mafia’ and claimed he will not disclose the name of that person who offered him as he knew the PML-N leadership will create problems for him.
The CM has contended that the false and defamatory statements having been widely communicated, circulated, disseminated and got broadcast, through print and electronic media, lowered, and/or tended to lower the plaintiff in the estimation of others and reduce him to ridicule, unjust criticism, dislike, hatred and contempt and causing him extreme mental torture, agony and anxiety.
He has prayed to the court that a decree for recovery of Rs10 billion as compensation for the publication of the aforesaid defamatory content be passed against the defendant and in his favor.
