LAHORE: Sensing a wide opening – politically -- after the decline of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement (MQM), the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) sets sight on Sindh for the upcoming round of rallies and political gatherings, The Express Tribune has learnt.

Former prime minister Nawaz Sharif is expected to address two political gatherings in interior Sindh to muster support for the PML-N. Railways Minister Khawaja Saad Rafique and Senator Mushahidullah Khan were already in Karachi, levelling the field for their campaign.

Sharif, currently in London, is expected to arrive in Lahore along with his daughter, Maryam Nawaz, on Sunday (today), according to the PML-N. Punjab Chief Minister Shehbaz Sharif is expected to return to Lahore on Tuesday.

The PML-N sees Sindh in state of political flux after the changes in its political dynamics. A source said by merely increasing its presence in the province, the PML-N would be able to win a lot of support from the people.

He said that no party in Sindh had done anything for the people of Sindh. The MQM, after change in its leadership, had lost its grip over the urban areas, while the Pakistan People Party (PPP) delivered nothing to reclaim votes, he said, adding that the PML-N, with its achievements, could easily win a few seats in the province, seen as the PPP stronghold.

Senator Mushahidullah Khan said they held a “very successful” political gathering in Karachi on Friday. “There’s already a huge support for the PML-N in the province for ending load-shedding and bringing peace to Karachi,” he said.

Senator Khan said the PML-N would hold more of political gatherings in the province in the coming weeks. He announced that Sharif would address the political gatherings in Sindh in December.

“We have the third largest local bodies seats in Karachi, which prove the people’s appreciation for the PML-N,” Khan added. “After Sindh, we will also focus on Balochistan. Our presence is visible in Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa so attention is needed to these two provinces.”
