Capital gets ‘soup kitchen’ for art
Singer Arieb Azhar launches groundbreaking initiative
ISLAMABAD:
Renowned folk singer Arieb Azhar has given the art-starved residents of the capital a new platform to showcase and view art.
The “Art Langar”, launched over the weekend, aims to establish a sustainable model for new artists to indulge in their passion apart from showcasing their talents for a wider audience.
Art Langar’s first two-day event was held at the Rock Musicarium near Lake View Park on the weekend.
Speaking to the media, Art Langar director Azhar said that the initiative would bring together the fine art and music community in the capital.
He added that the initiative aims to connect the traditional concept of ‘Langar’ — a soup kitchen where the poor are fed food thanks to philanthropic donations — with music and arts and to demonstrate a practical and humanist aspect of art.
The Art Langar has three components including art installations, musical performances, collaborations and ‘Langar’ which is the gift of food to deserving people.
Azhar said that the Installations will be promoted through outdoor festivals where professional artists, as well as art and design departments of multiple educational institutions, shall be engaged to create innovative and interactive artworks.
Moreover, he said that some of the best folk, rock and contemporary musicians from across the country will be invited to the amphitheatre to showcase their talent apart from collaborating with others.
An open drum circle will be organised around a bonfire as well as interactive sessions with music mentors.
