LAHORE: In order to promote peace, tolerance and harmony, 24 public sector universities of Punjab have prepared action plans on the regional and university levels.

The plans have been prepared under a joint venture by the University of Education (UoE) and Punjab Higher Education Commission (PHEC). Other plans were also prepared by the Directors Student Affairs (DSAs) who are considered direct points of contact to deal with various issues faced by university students.

According to the three regional plans, central, northern and southern universities have agreed to undertake collaborative efforts by organising inter-university cultural, sports, literary and co-curricular competitions and festivals among students.

Other parts of the plan included strengthening student societies, organising workshops for students, giving them perspectives for the promotion of peace, tolerance and conflict resolution as well as provision of various facilities such as counselling through student service centres.

Seminars, peace walks, social media summit, training of office-bearers of all societies of the region on structure, functions and resources, open minded student forum for students, appointment of  peace proctors at departmental level are also part of the plans.

The varsities have also agreed to avail one another’s experiences and expertise to promote peace and tolerance on university campuses. In this regard, regional forums of universities would be established.

The DSAs also suggested the Punjab government allocate a sum of Rs500 per student in order to engage the enrolled university students in various extra-curricular and health-related activities.

The participants were unanimously of the view that strengthening the directorate of student affairs would help address violence and extremism on university campuses.
