Navy bus blasts: Political figures condemn attacks

Emergency meeting called to address the city’s security situation.

KARACHI:

At 7:30 am on Tuesday morning two blasts resound at two ends of the city — one in Defence Phase II and the other in Baldia Town — both targeting Pakistan Navy buses. Taking notice of the attacks, politicians all over the country were quick to express their anger.

Sindh Chief Minister Qaim Ali Shah announced that an emergency meeting between the police, intelligence agencies and government officials has been called to look into security measures.

After visiting the injured Navy personnel at PNS Shifa Hospital, he told reporters that the government was taking serious measures to pre-empt terrorism. Replying to a question, however, he admitted that, “it is not possible to check every vehicle, and the threat of terrorism is always present”. He has directed the Sindh Police Inspector General to submit an inquiry report.

In Lahore, the Punjab governor, Sardar Muhammad Latif Khan Khosa, expressed concern over the loss of lives. The governor said that these “cowardly acts” were part of a conspiracy by anti-state elements.  For his part, Muttahida Qaumi Movement chief Altaf Hussain also condemned the attack and said that the government should take notice of it. He issued a statement in which he too communicated his sorrow over the four navy officers who were killed and said that the blasts were the worst form of terrorism.

“The terrorists carrying out such despicable and inhuman attacks are enemies of the state and are actively conspiring to weaken national security.” They do not deserve any mercy and must be dealt with full power of the law, he added.
