A contingent of 11 Polish mountaineers is preparing for a bold attempt to conquer the savage mountain, K2 this year.
The world’s second highest mountain, unlike other 8,000 metre peaks, has never been scaled in winter.
The climbers plan to fly to Pakistan in late December. “We are on the home stretch in our preparations,” Krzysztof Wielicki, head of the expedition, was quoted as saying by Poland’s PAP news agency. “In a week we will send out 600 kilogrammes of cargo, and in addition, we are taking 400 kg or perhaps even half a tonne of equipment with us,” said 67-year-old Wielicki.
K2 and its dangers are not unknown to Wielicki who led an unsuccessful Polish attempt on the 8,611-metre mountain 14 years ago. However, he was more hopeful for their success this time since equipment has improved considerably since, for example in terms of clothing.
