Faizabad sit-in: IHC issues contempt notice to Ahsan Iqbal
Court irked by government’s failure to end sit-in
The Islamabad High Court issued a contempt notice to Interior Minister Ahsan Iqbal on Friday for not taking any steps to end the Faizabad sit-in that has entered its third week.
Hearing a case pertaining to the Faizabad sit-in, Justice Shaukat Aziz Siddiqui asked the chief commissioner why the government had not taken any steps to end the sit-in despite court orders.
Prolonging the standoff
Irked by government’s failure to end the sit-in, Justice Siddiqui asked the chief commissioner why the sit-in had not ended despite court orders.
To this the chief commissioner responded saying that the government had stopped them from taking any action against the protestors.
Justice Siddiqui then questioned how any minister or even the prime minister could refuse to follow court orders.
“This is a deliberate attempt to disrespect the court’s orders,” justice Siddiqui said in his remarks adding that with what authority had the interior minister asked authorities not to take action against the protestors.
IHC had directed the office-bearers of the bar association on Tuesday to meet the Faizabad protesters and inform them about the court’s orders to end their blockade.
Justice Siddiqui had summoned the office-bearers of the Islamabad High Court Bar Association (IHCBA) to resolve the issue.
