Sugarcane: PBIF urges resolving pricing stand-off

The Pakistan Businessmen and Intellectuals Forum (PBIF) urged the government to find a solution to the standoff between cane millers and farmers over sugarcane production.
PBIF President Mian Zahid Hussain, in a statement, said that increased sugarcane production has resulted in larger surplus stocks which need immediate attention of the federal and provincial governments. He was of the view that growing tensions between owners of sugar mills and growers is likely to cause damages.

He said that millers wanted the federal government to increase export subsidy from Rs10.70 to Rs19 otherwise they would not be able to pay more than Rs145 per 40 kg of sugarcane, whose price has been fixed at Rs180 per 40 kg.
