Government promises to end G-B power cuts

Govt announces prolonged power cuts in G-B will end by first week of May.

GILGIT:

The government has announced that the prolonged power cuts in Gilgit-Baltistan will end by the first week of May.

“Water levels are rising in lakes and water channels and the repair of channels is also on a fast track,” said Naveed Mohsin, the water and power secretary on Sunday. Power cuts last an average of 20 hours a day in Gilgit.

The region’s power infrastructure was devastated by the floods of 2010 and has suffered further due to cold weather which has slowed the melting of glaciers.

Most of the region’s power comes from hydroelectric generation units.
