LAHORE:
The provincial government has formed 36 joint investigation teams (JITs), one in each district, to investigate terrorism cases in accordance with the Anti Terrorism Act (ATA).
A senior police official said on Sunday that a notification in this regard has been issued.
He said each JIT would be headed by the SP (Investigations) of the respective district. He said it would include an inspector from the Counter Terrorism Department (CTD) and an inspector or the DSP from the local police.
AIG (Investigation Branch) Muhammad Azam Joiya said the JITs would help speed up investigation of terrorism cases.
He hoped that the establishment of JITs would help improve investigation of terrorist crimes.
According to the official data available with The Express Tribune, suspects in 471 of the 629 terrorism cases decided by anti-terrorism courts in 2009 were acquitted.
Chief Justice of Pakistan, Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary, has recently taken notice of the large number of terrorism suspects being released on bail.
CJ has appointed Justice Shakirullah Jan as an administrative judge of the Anti Terrorism Courts and directed him to monitor their performance.
