National Judicial Commission: SC recommends additional judges for posting

Commission proposes induction of 14 additional judges in Lahore High Court.

ISLAMABAD:

The National Judicial Commission (NJC) headed by Chief Justice Iftikhar Muhammad Chaudhary on Saturday has recommended 14 out of 17 additional judges of the Lahore High Court (LHC) and four additional judges of the Balochistan High Court (BHC) for confirmation to the parliamentary committee on appointment of judges.

The commission also proposed the induction of 10 new additional judges in the LHC and three additional judges in the BHC. Out of the 10 nominees for the slot of additional judges, six are session judges and four are lawyers. They are Abdul Waheed, Kazim Shamsi, Ijaz Shah, Mehmood Maqbool Bajwa, Muhammad Younis and Abdul Sattar Asgher, Advocate Shahzad Ghaba, Advocate Ameer Bhatti, Advocate Altaf Ibrahim Qureshi and Advocate Aminuddin. The three candidates for the slot of additional judges in the BHC are Abdul Qadir Mengal, Naeem Akhtar and Hashim Kakar.

At the last meeting, Senator Maula Bux Chandio had informed the members that he would not be able to attend since he had not been sworn in. This left the NJC without representation from the federal government and the meeting was postponed until April 23. The NJC had been scheduled to take up the extension in the appointments of 21 additional judges for the Balochistan and Lahore High Courts. Chandio was appointed as the law minister after his predecessor, Babar Awan, resigned to appear for the president’s reference on the ZA Bhutto judicial murder case in the Supreme Court. Awan was forbidden from appearing in court while still a cabinet member.

The meeting of the National Judicial Commission was attended by Justice Javed Iqbal, Justice Mian Shakirullah Jan, Justice Nasirul Mulk, Justice Ijaz Ahmed, Maula Bux Chandio, Maulvi Anwarul Haq and Dr Khalid Ranjha. Justice Tassaduq Hussain Jillani could not attend as he is on sick leave. Chief Justice LHC, Justice Ijaz Ahmed Chaudhary, Justice Iftikhar Hussain, Rana Sanaullah Khan, Rai Bashir Ahmad, Chief Justice BHC Justice Qazi Faiz Esa, Justice Jamal Khan Mandokhel, Shama Parveen Magsi, and Muhammad Kamran Mullakhel were also present.
