Govt steps up work on splitting power companies
Minister directs CEOs of three firms to table proposals immediately
ISLAMABAD:
The government has kicked off work on implementing the plan of splitting state-owned power distribution companies for their better management and developing a consumer-oriented approach.
In a meeting held on Thursday, Federal Minister for Power Division Sardar Awais Ahmad Khan Leghari issued directives that board of directors of Multan, Lahore and Peshawar electricity supplying companies must decide on their division and their chief executive officers should immediately table consolidated proposals for consideration of the boards.

The minister emphasised that boards of distribution companies should be involved in all decision-making and their decisions should be implemented in true letter and spirit. He told the Power Division to come up with a plan on enhancing the capacity of existing board of directors by including professionals from diverse fields.
He suggested that the boards should play their vigilant and decisive role in strategic decision-making and discharge their duties as per corporate governance.
“All distribution companies should have financial autonomy and they should be able to generate their own funds from the open market instead of from the government,” he said.
Leghari assured meeting participants that all efforts would be made to enable power distribution companies to function without any political interference and directed the companies to take strict administrative action against the employees using political or other influence.
NEPRA increases K-Electric’s tariff, but the company isn’t pleased
He, however, voiced concern over the human resources department of distribution companies, which failed to exploit the potential of their human resources and strengthen the companies by filling vacant positions. He directed that all vacant posts at the officers’ level should be filled at the earliest, which would bring more efficiency.
The minister called for introducing lucrative rewards for top performers of distribution companies in order to encourage them and promote healthy competition among employees.
