KARACHI:
An official of the Sindh Police's special branch was shot dead in an act of targeted killing in District Central on Wednesday.

Officials said that the incident took place when the deceased cop, 44-year-old Naveed Akhtar, son of Abdul Majeed, was on his way home after his duty hours ended. He was gunned down by armed motorcyclists when he had almost reached his house located in Shadman Town within the limits of Sharae Noor Jahan police station.

The police added that the assailants were waiting for Akhtar at the scene of the crime and were aware he returned home around that time. The deceased official was shot multiple times and he died on the spot. The body was shifted to Abbasi Shaheed Hospital for medico-legal formalities.

A contingent of law enforcers reached the site and collected evidence. They claimed to have recovered empty shells of a 9mm pistol from the crime scene.

SHO Amir Shah said the deceased official was posted to the special branch in Gadap Town and lived in Ashraf Plaza in Shadman Town No 1. The SHO added that according to initial investigations, the official was killed in an act of targeted killing and the case was being investigated from different angles.

Funeral prayers for the victim were offered at the Police Headquarters, Garden, which ,besides relatives, were attended by Home Minister Sohail Anwar Siyal, Karachi Additional IG Mushtaq Mahar and other senior police officials. Speaking on the occasion, Siyal said the heirs of the martyred cop would be compensated. He also lauded the sacrifices made by the police in maintaining the law and order in the city.
