Environmental laws: Non-compliant industries sent notices

Korangi trade association launches tree plantation project.

KARACHI:

The Ministry of Environment has served notices on some industries which have failed to dispose of their waste properly and is planning to take further action against the industries that fail to comply with environmental laws.

Sindh Environment Minister Shaikh Muhammad Afzal disclosed this while speaking to industrialists at the Korangi Association of Trade and Industry (KATI) on the occasion of the launch of ‘Green Korangi Industrial Area’ project, a tree plantation drive, on Saturday. The programme was held in connection with the world’s Earth Day that is celebrated on April 22.

Speaking about environmental degradation, he said, “There is growing concern about environmental degradation and we must recognise this development.”

In response to another question, Afzal said that he was “satisfied with the measures taken to protect environment in industrial zones” and hoped that the situation would improve gradually. The minister urged industrialists to plant trees in the Korangi industrial area to make it a model green zone in Karachi city.

“We cannot live safely if we neglect environmental degradation,” he said, adding, “We cannot give excuses that we have passed 64 years ignoring the environment and we will continue doing this.”

Owing to the challenges of global warming, Pakistan could not afford a passive behaviour, he added. “Experts say that last year’s floods in Pakistan were cyclic and they expect more in the next three to five years.”

KATI Acting Chairman Saleemuz Zaman said that Korangi’s town administration would provide machinery and logistical support to industrialists to help them build green fields in the zone.

Zaman requested industrialists to play their role and plant trees in the zone. Industrialists agreed to grow trees in front of their factories, while also offering to take responsibility of developing green belts in their respective areas.
