Moong Shortage: Country may be forced to import

Production of moong has been declining since 2007-08.

FAISALABAD:

Agricultural marketing experts have warned that the country may need to import moong during the current season, as the cultivated area may not yield the required quantity.

Production of moong has been declining since 2007-08. Between July and November 2010, 269.7 tons of moong worth Rs15,567 million were imported.

Prices of moong in the domestic market also recorded an upward trend, increasing from Rs6,250 per 100 kg to Rs10,385. Moreover, last year’s floods reduced production from 124,000 tons to 60,000 tons.

Agricultural experts claimed arrangements were being made by the Punjab Seed Corporation to provide good quality moong seeds for the upcoming crop season.
